Qualcomm has quietly unveiled the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 (SM-6475 AB), adding another member to its Snapdragon 6 series lineup. The company made no formal announcement about the chip’s launch, instead silently listing it on Qualcomm’s official website.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 3: A Downgraded Version of Snapdragon 7s Gen 2?
Speculation is swirling that the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 is essentially a rebranded version of the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, with some key differences. While Qualcomm hasn’t officially confirmed this, multiple sources and tech publications suggest the 6 Gen 3 is a slightly downgraded version of its predecessor.
Both chipsets share a similar core configuration, featuring four Cortex-A78 performance cores and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores. They also utilize the Adreno 710 GPU and support LPDDR4x/LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. Both boast features like AI capabilities, a 5G modem, Wi-Fi 6e, Bluetooth 5.2, and support for up to 200MP cameras.
However, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 has slightly lower clock speeds for the efficiency cores (1.8 GHz vs 1.95 GHz in the 7s Gen 2). Additionally, the 7s Gen 2 supports 144Hz refresh rates at FHD+ resolution, while the 6 Gen 3 only supports up to 120Hz. Consequently, the 6 Gen 3 is expected to offer slightly less performance compared to the 7s Gen 2.
While the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 offers similar features and capabilities to the 7s Gen 2, it’s essentially a slightly underclocked version with some limitations in display support and overall performance. Qualcomm likely rebranded it as the 6 Gen 3 to offer a more budget-friendly option for smartphone manufacturers.
