Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro is just around the corner, launching on November 7th, promising a significant leap forward in terms of graphical fidelity. However, with a hefty price tag attached, gamers are left wondering if the performance gains justify the cost.
PlayStation 5 Pro: A Visual Upgrade Like Moving to an RTX 4070
Digital Foundry, a renowned tech review site, has had the opportunity to go hands-on with the console, and their findings are promising. They claim that upgrading from the base PS5 to the Pro model feels akin to moving from an RTX 3060 or 3060 Ti to an RTX 4070 graphics card – a substantial jump in performance.
“The addition of PSSR in particular gives you a lot more to play with potentially on the PS5 Pro, and gives you a more significant upgrade than you would expect from the raw specs alone,”
Digital Foundry stated. “That 45% boost in raster performance or that 67% boost in CU count, I think is under selling it.”
This upgrade is particularly noticeable in games like F1 24, where developers have specifically optimized the PS5 Pro version. While the improvements might not be as dramatic in all games, the PS5 Pro still delivers a noticeable visual boost, especially for those who prefer playing in Performance Mode.
The Pro model also boasts enhanced ray tracing capabilities, which could entice even those who typically play in the base PS5’s Quality Mode. However, the difference in visual quality between the two consoles in Quality Mode might not be as pronounced, especially at standard viewing distances.
Another key feature is the PS5 Pro’s PSSR upscaler. This technology not only enhances the overall visual quality but also improves ray tracing performance, although it’s not as advanced as NVIDIA’s DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction.
Ultimately, Digital Foundry concludes that the PS5 Pro is a worthwhile investment for gamers who prioritize image quality, play at 60fps, or desire more graphics/RT features.
“If you do fall into one of those two camps….I think the PS5 Pro is a really good investment,” they stated.
They also highlight the convenience, cost, and hassle-free factor compared to a gaming PC.
“I think for a hassle free gaming experience, delivering high fidelity visuals with no particular issues with updates, with incompatibility, a very stable and smooth operating system, I don’t think you’re going to get that out of PC for at least another few years here,”
Digital Foundry remarked. “It’s also fairly favorable in terms of cost relative to a PC.”
The launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro is just a month away, and gamers will soon be able to decide for themselves if it’s a worthy upgrade or just a pricey addition to their gaming setup.
