Rockstar Games officially confirmed they were working on GTA 6 in February 2022 and released the first official trailer on December 5, 2023. The second trailer followed in May 2025. Following a second delay, Rockstar Games has announced a new release date. The initial target was late 2025, which was then pushed to May 26, 2026, and finally to November 19, 2026.
So, why the additional delay? According to their statement, the developers need additional time to finish the game to meet the high level of polish that players expect and deserve. Rockstar Games apologized for the schedule change.
“We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”
“We want to thank you again for your patience and support. While the wait is a little longer, we are incredibly excited for players to experience the sprawling state of Leonida and a return to modern-day Vice City,” the company said.
What features and game mechanics can we expect in Grand Theft Auto VI?
The game will feature a significant leap in realism and immersion, borrowing heavily from Red Dead Redemption 2‘s detailed mechanics while expanding core GTA features. Key expectations include a dual-protagonist system, highly advanced AI, and a world where player actions have visible consequences.
Dynamic World and Interactivity
- Dual Protagonists: The story centers on a Bonnie and Clyde-inspired duo, Lucia Caminos (the series’ first female lead in a modern title) and Jason Duval. Players can switch between them, and some open-world activities will allow using both simultaneously during heists.
- Vast, Detailed Map: The game is set in the modern-day state of Leonida (based on Florida), with a focus on a fully realized Vice City (Miami) and surrounding areas like the Florida Keys and Everglades. The map is expected to be nearly twice the size of GTA V’s.
- Enterable Interiors: A major focus is on increased interactivity, with hundreds of enterable locations, including restaurants, bars, motels, pawn shops, and fully explorable malls and skyscrapers.
- Dynamic Events: The world will feature over 1,500 dynamic world events, making the environment feel more alive and less scripted.
Enhanced Realism and Systems
- Advanced Physics and Graphics: Expect next-generation visuals with ray tracing, detailed character animations (including sweating and muscle deformation), realistic hair physics, and object-specific fluid physics.
- RDR2-inspired Inventory & Customization: A more realistic weapon system means players can only carry a limited number of weapons on their person, with the rest stored in vehicle trunks. Vehicle and character customization are expected to be deeper than in GTA V, including detailed interiors with working mirrors and gauges.
- Smarter AI: Police AI is significantly improved, with officers behaving more strategically, remembering player actions (e.g., car model, license plate), and using surveillance cameras. NPCs will also have more complex daily routines and reactions to the player’s presence (e.g., reacting to a drawn weapon).
- Dynamic Weather and Environment: The game will feature a highly advanced weather system with realistic storms and hurricanes that impact gameplay (e.g., slippery roads, NPCs seeking shelter). Water physics are also vastly improved for water-based activities like fishing and boating.
Gameplay Mechanics
- New Combat and Stealth: Enhanced stealth mechanics are expected, along with a refined cover system and improved melee combat.
- Special Abilities: Both Jason and Lucia will have their own special abilities, similar to the protagonists in GTA V, with Jason’s expected to be a slow-motion targeting ability similar to RDR2’s “Dead Eye.”
- Return of Past Activities: A wide range of minigames and activities is confirmed to return, including basketball, tennis, golf, gym workouts, hunting, and fishing.
Grand Theft Auto VI will first launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version isn’t announced yet, but based on Rockstar’s past releases like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, expect it later. The game won’t be on older consoles like PlayStation 4 or Xbox One due to its advanced tech requirements.
