A new report from tipster Ming-Chi Kuo outlines key details about a possible smartphone developed by OpenAI, including its chipset, production schedule, and AI-focused features.
The device is said to use a custom processor designed in partnership with MediaTek. The chip will reportedly be based on the upcoming MediaTek Dimensity 9600 platform, with enhancements tailored for AI workloads. It is expected to be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced N2P process node. The smartphone is also tipped to feature next-generation memory and storage, including LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 flash storage, positioning it among future flagship-tier devices.
According to the tipster, mass production could begin in early 2027, with shipments estimated to reach around 30 million units between 2027 and 2028, suggesting a large-scale rollout if the project materializes. The development is linked to OpenAI, with MediaTek expected to act as the sole chip supplier, while TSMC would handle fabrication of the custom silicon.

The details were shared by Ming-Chi Kuo on X (formerly Twitter), a platform often used by the analyst to publish supply chain insights. The reported device appears to place heavy emphasis on artificial intelligence and imaging, featuring a dual-NPU (Neural Processing Unit) architecture to boost on-device AI performance. The image signal processor (ISP) is also expected to focus on advanced computational photography, including improved HDR and visual AI capabilities.
Security features are also expected to be part of the device. The leaked specifications mention pKVM (protected Kernel-based Virtual Machine) and inline hashing, both aimed at protecting system data and on-device processes.
If the report proves accurate, the smartphone would mark OpenAI’s first major move into consumer hardware. With production reportedly targeted for 2027, the device could place the company alongside established smartphone brands while focusing heavily on on-device AI and camera performance.
