Samsung is known for its flagship Exynos chips that power its Galaxy S and Note series smartphones. However, the company also produces mid-range processors for its Galaxy A and M series devices. One of these chips is the Exynos 1380, which debuted in 2022 and featured an octa-core CPU and a Mali-G78 GPU.
Now, Samsung is reportedly working on a successor to the Exynos 1380, called the Exynos 1480. This chip is expected to launch in 2024 and will bring some significant improvements over its predecessor. The most notable one is the inclusion of a custom AMD GPU, based on the RDNA 2 architecture. This GPU, dubbed as the Xclipse 530, will offer better graphics performance and efficiency than the Mali-G78.
The Exynos 1480 has recently appeared on Geekbench, a popular benchmarking platform, revealing some of its core specifications. According to the listing, the chip has an octa-core CPU with four performance cores clocked at 2.75 GHz and four efficiency cores clocked at 2.05 GHz. The base frequency of the chip is 2.05 GHz.
The Geekbench scores of the Exynos 1480 are also impressive, especially when compared to the Exynos 1380. The new chip achieved a score of 882 in single-core tests and 2,808 in multi-core tests. In comparison, the Exynos 1380 scored 776 and 2,599, respectively.
The Exynos 1480 is rumored to power the upcoming Galaxy A55, a premium mid-range smartphone that will succeed the Galaxy A54. The Galaxy A55 is expected to debut in the first quarter of next year, along with other Galaxy A-series phones that will also use the Exynos 1480.
The Exynos 1480 is not the only chip that Samsung is developing with AMD graphics. The company has already launched the Exynos 2400, a flagship processor that features an RDNA 3 GPU. This chip powers the Galaxy S24 series, which competes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 devices.
Samsung’s partnership with AMD seems to be paying off, as the company is able to offer more competitive and diverse chips for its smartphones. The Exynos 1480 is a testament to that, as it will bring AMD graphics to the mid-range segment for the first time.
