The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the most acclaimed games of all time, but what if it could look even better? Thanks to a modder named Digital Dreams, we can now see how the game would look like in stunning 8K resolution with complete ray tracing enabled.

Zelda

Ray tracing is a technique that simulates realistic lighting effects by tracing the path of light rays in a 3D scene. It can create reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion, and global illumination that make the graphics more immersive and lifelike. However, ray tracing is also very demanding on hardware, and most games do not support it natively.

Digital Dreams used the CEMU emulator, which allows PC gamers to run Wii U games, and applied a custom shader called Complete Ray Tracing (CRT), developed by NiceGuy. This shader is more advanced than other ray tracing shaders, as it also adds features like depth of field, bloom, lens flares, and chromatic aberration.

The result is a breathtaking video that shows Link exploring various locations in Hyrule, from forests and swamps to mountains and beaches. The video demonstrates how ray tracing enhances the game’s already beautiful art style, adding more depth, contrast, and realism to the environments. The video also runs at 60 frames per second, which is twice as fast as the original game on Switch.

Of course, this mod is not something that most players can experience for themselves, as it requires a very powerful PC and an 8K monitor. It also involves emulation, which is a legally gray area. However, it is still an impressive showcase of what modders can achieve with creativity and technology.

Perhaps one day, Nintendo will release an official remaster of Breath of the Wild with ray tracing support, or maybe the sequel will have it. Until then, we can only admire Digital Dreams’ work and wonder what other games could look like with this mod.
