Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip is expected to outperform Apple’s M2 in graphics performance, according to a new rumor. The chip, which will be based on TSMC’s 3nm process, will feature a next-generation Adreno 830 GPU that is rumored to be 10 percent faster than the M2 in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme, a benchmark that tests the graphics capabilities of mobile devices.

    Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Features

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will also feature Qualcomm’s first custom Oryon CPU cores, which are expected to deliver a significant boost in performance and efficiency compared to the previous generation. The chip will have eight cores, four high-performance and four high-efficiency, with a shared 8 MB last level cache. The high-performance cores will have a 16 MB L2 cache, while the high-efficiency cores will have a 4 MB L2 cache.

The rumor comes from a tipster named Revegnus, who posted the alleged benchmark scores and specifications of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 on Twitter. According to the tipster, the Adreno 830 GPU scored 7,200 points in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme, which is 10 percent higher than the score achieved by the M2 with an 8-core GPU. The tipster also claimed that the Oryon CPU cores scored over 2,000 points in single-core and over 8,600 points in multi-core tests on Geekbench 5, which are impressive results for a mobile chip.

However, these claims should be taken with a grain of salt, as they are not confirmed by any official sources. It is also possible that the benchmark scores were obtained from engineering samples that may not reflect the final performance of the chip. Moreover, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will likely face thermal and power constraints when used in actual devices, which may affect its performance and battery life.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to launch in the second half of 2024, and will power many high-end Android smartphones from various brands. The chip will compete with Apple’s M2, which is already available in some MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, and is expected to be used in more Mac devices and iPad Pro models in the future. The M2 is also based on a 5nm process, and features eight cores, four high-performance and four high-efficiency, with a shared 16 MB last level cache. The M2 also has an integrated 8-core or 10-core GPU, depending on the device.

Both Qualcomm and Apple are known for their innovation and leadership in the mobile chip industry, and their products often set the standards for performance and efficiency. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and the M2 are expected to be the most advanced and powerful chips in their respective categories, and will offer users a superior experience in various tasks and applications. However, the ultimate comparison between the two chips will depend on how they perform in real-world scenarios, and how they balance speed and battery life.
