According to a recent article on Tom’s Guide, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is rumored to have an impressive astrophotography feature that could allow it to capture galaxies and nebulas. While the Galaxy S23 Ultra already boasts the ability to capture detailed moon shots, the S24 Ultra is expected to take the next logical leap in smartphone photography.

The article highlights the author’s personal experience with astrophotography and the rewarding nature of capturing galaxies and nebulas that are not visible to the naked eye. While current smartphones can capture faint stars in the night sky, they fall short when it comes to capturing the intricate details of deep space objects.

To address this limitation, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is rumored to have a “quad telephoto” setup with zoom ranges of 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x. The 10x zoom range is particularly important as it would allow for the best image quality, even when using digital zoom. Additionally, the leaked specs sheet suggests a 100x Space Zoom function, which would be crucial for capturing the fine details of galaxies and nebulas.

To further enhance its astrophotography capabilities, Samsung is expected to leverage artificial intelligence (Galaxy AI). One common technique in astrophotography is stacking, where multiple photos are layered on top of each other to create a brighter and more detailed image. The Galaxy S24 Ultra would need to be mounted on a tripod to capture long exposures and utilize AI to stack and eliminate noise and other artifacts.

Powering all of this would require significant processing power, which is where the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset comes into play. Built with AI in mind, this chipset is expected to handle the complex tasks of stacking and cleaning up images.

The article suggests that the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s astrophotography capabilities, coupled with its investment in artificial intelligence, could position it as the best camera phone on the market. Samsung seems to be heavily focused on AI, with features like the Samsung Gauss AI image generating model, which could enhance the editing and cleaning up of images.

Excitingly, Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 is just around the corner, with an official date of January 17. This event will likely unveil not only the Galaxy S24 Ultra but also other models in the lineup, such as the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus. It won’t be long before we discover the full potential of these new smartphones.
