Google has announced plans to include a native Terminal app and full Linux VM support with GPU acceleration in Android 16. This exciting development builds upon the Android Virtualization Framework (AVF), introduced in Android 13 and further enhanced in Android 15. The new feature will allow users to run a complete Linux distribution within a virtual machine, complete with a graphical user interface (GUI) and GPU acceleration.

The new Terminal app will allow users to run a complete Linux distribution within a virtual machine, complete with a graphical user interface (GUI) and GPU acceleration. This opens up a world of possibilities for developers and power users alike, enabling them to access a vast array of command-line tools and run desktop applications on their Android devices.

Here's a demo of Android's in-development Terminal app for running Linux apps!

The Terminal app currently doesn't automatically download and configure the Linux VM for you, so the developer who sent me this had to use the LinuxInstaller app to download Debian.

“This is a game-changer for the Android ecosystem,” said Mishaal Rahman, a prominent Android developer and commentator.

“Having a native Terminal app with full Linux VM support will empower developers and power users with unprecedented flexibility and control over their devices.”

The Terminal app is expected to offer a range of features, including:

    • Disk resizing: Easily manage the storage space allocated to the Linux VM.
    • Port forwarding: Securely connect to services running within the VM from the outside world.
    • Partition recovery: Recover data from damaged or corrupted partitions.
    • Snapshot backup and restore: Create backups of the Linux VM for easy recovery or experimentation.
    • Nested virtualization: Run virtual machines within the Linux VM for even greater flexibility.

While the initial release of the Terminal app may require manual provisioning of a Debian image and configuration file, Google plans to simplify the process with a dedicated LinuxInstaller app. This will make it easier for users to set up and use the Linux VM without needing extensive technical knowledge.

The integration of Linux VM support into Android 16 has the potential to unlock a wide range of exciting possibilities:

    • Enhanced developer tools: Developers can now access a powerful Linux environment directly on their mobile devices, enabling them to code, test, and debug applications on the go.
    • Desktop application compatibility: Android users may be able to run desktop applications like web browsers, productivity suites, and even gaming software within the Linux VM.
    • Increased customization: Users can further personalize their Android experience by installing and running custom Linux distributions and software.
    • New possibilities for mobile gaming: The GPU acceleration feature could enable high-performance gaming experiences within the Linux VM, opening up new opportunities for mobile gaming.

While the release of Android 16 is still a few months away, the inclusion of a native Terminal app and full Linux VM support promises to be a major milestone for the Android platform. This innovation could fundamentally change the way we interact with our mobile devices, empowering users with greater flexibility, control, and access to a wider range of applications and tools.
