Apple is reportedly working on a new version of its popular iPhone SE, which is expected to feature a design similar to the iPhone 14 and support Face ID. The iPhone SE 4, as it is being called, could be a major upgrade from the current iPhone SE (2022), which has an outdated design with a home button and thick bezels.
According to MacRumors, the iPhone SE 4 will use a modified version of the iPhone 14 chassis and will even maintain iPhone 14 test parameters for internal testing. The device will not have a Touch ID home button, but will instead have Face ID as the means of biometric identification. The iPhone SE 4 will also likely receive a new OLED panel, derived from the iPhone 14.
The iPhone SE 4 will also feature a single rear camera with a flash, similar to the third-generation iPhone SE. However, the exact design of the camera bump remains unclear, as Apple has developed at least five different designs for it. The iPhone SE 4 may also feature a 48-megapixel rear camera, providing a significant upgrade from the current model.
Another major change expected for the iPhone SE 4 is the inclusion of a USB-C port, instead of the Lightning port. This could be due to the upcoming European Union regulations that require smartphone makers to adopt a common charging standard. The iPhone SE 4 will also have an Action button, which is a multi-purpose button that replaces the mute switch on newer iPhone models.
The iPhone SE 4 could also be the first iPhone with Apple’s in-house 5G modem, codenamed “Sinope”. Apple is using the iPhone SE 4 to test the new hardware, which is expected to debut with the iPhone 16 lineup. The iPhone SE 4 will support both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G bands, offering faster and more reliable connectivity.
The iPhone SE 4 is rumored to be released in 2025, as Apple is not planning to refresh the iPhone SE lineup in 2024. The device could cost around $399, which is the same price as the current iPhone SE (2022). The iPhone SE 4 could be a great option for customers who want a modern and affordable iPhone with a small form factor.
