Apple has issued a new software update for two of its oldest iPhone models, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, extending their usability more than a decade after release. The update, iOS 12.5.8, arrived in 2026 and applies to devices launched in 2013 and 2014.

The update focuses on system maintenance rather than new features. Apple says iOS 12.5.8 required security certificates that are necessary for services such as iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation to continue working.

Here is the list of older devices that support the update:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPad Air
  • iPad mini 2
  • iPad mini 3
  • iPod touch (6th generation)

As older certificates expire, devices running outdated software may lose access to these services. By updating the certificates, Apple ensures that these older iPhones can still connect to Apple’s servers and remain functional for communication and activation.

It is reported that the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 will continue working normally until at least January 2027 following the update. While both models stopped receiving major iOS feature updates years ago, this release keeps essential services operational.

Providing software support for devices more than a decade old remains uncommon in the smartphone industry. The update highlights Apple’s long-term approach to maintaining older hardware, even after it has been discontinued from regular support cycles.
