Google today announced the evolution of its groundbreaking Project Starline into Google Beam, a new 3D video communication platform designed to revolutionize how we connect remotely. For years, Project Starline has captivated audiences with its ability to create incredibly realistic video calls, making remote conversations feel almost as if participants are in the same room. Now, this technology is assured for widespread adoption.

Beam achieves this through a sophisticated combination of hardware and AI. Six cameras and a light field display generate realistic 3D representations of participants. This system, powered by a compact display, a Chrome OS-based computer, and a Google Cloud-based AI model, is being manufactured by partners like HP.
The platform’s core strength lies in its advanced AI. A state-of-the-art volumetric video model transforms standard 2D video streams into immersive 3D experiences, capturing subtle communication cues often lost in traditional video conferencing. This results in a significantly more natural and intuitive interaction, fostering genuine eye contact and a stronger sense of presence.
Built on Google Cloud, Beam offers enterprise-grade reliability and seamless integration with existing workflows. Furthermore, Google is addressing the global need for seamless cross-cultural communication by integrating real-time speech translation capabilities, initially with Google Meet. This feature ensures authentic, near real-time translated conversations that preserve the nuances of voice, tone, and expression.
Google is actively working with industry leaders like Zoom and HP to bring Google Beam to the enterprise market. HP is expected to unveil the first Google Beam devices at InfoComm in the coming weeks, with broader rollout to select customers later this year. Several major corporations, including Deloitte, Salesforce, Citadel, NEC, Hackensack Meridian Health, and Duolingo, have already expressed enthusiasm for the technology.
“Deloitte is excited about Google Beam as a groundbreaking, innovative step in human connection in the digital age,”
“Our teams and clients confirm this solution is not just a technological breakthrough but a reimagining of how we connect.”
Angel Ayala, Managing Director at Deloitte Consulting LLP.
Google Beam promises to transform remote communication, fostering more natural and meaningful connections across geographical and cultural lines. Its advanced AI, enterprise-ready design, and integrated language tools aim to make remote collaboration as intuitive and engaging as in-person meetings.
