HMD Global, the Finnish company behind the Nokia-branded phones, is gearing up to launch its first smartphone under its own brand name in April 2024. The device, which is likely to be called the HMD M-KOPA X1, will run on the Android operating system and will be part of the Android One program, which guarantees regular security and software updates.
Rumored Specs
The M-KOPA X1 will be a mid-range 5G smartphone, with a 6.5-inch display, a quad-camera setup, a Snapdragon 5G processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 4500mAh battery. The phone will also have a 3.5mm headphone jack, a fingerprint scanner, and a dedicated Google Assistant button. The phone will come in various colors, including blue, green, black, and white.
The M-KOPA X1 will be unveiled at an online event on April 2024, and will be available for pre-order on the same day. The phone will be priced at $399, and will be sold in selected markets, including Europe, Asia, and Latin America. HMD Global hopes that the HMD X will attract both loyal Nokia fans and new customers who are looking for a reliable, affordable, and stylish smartphone.
HMD Global’s CEO, Jean-Francois Baril, said that the HMD X is a milestone for the company, and a reflection of its vision and values. “We are excited to launch our own independent brand of smartphones, with a device that combines the best of HMD’s design, quality, and innovation, with the power and simplicity of Android. The HMD M-KOPA X1 is the perfect phone for anyone who wants a smartphone that works for them, not the other way around.”
HMD Global was founded in 2016 by former Nokia executives, who acquired the mobile phone business from Microsoft. The company has been producing Nokia-branded feature phones and tablets, but has not yet entered the smartphone market. HMD Global has a partnership with Google, and uses the Android One program, which offers a pure, secure and up-to-date Android experience.
HMD Global’s decision to launch its own brand of smartphones comes as the company prepares for the end of its licensing agreement with Nokia, which expires in 2026. The company also wants to diversify its portfolio and expand its presence in the global smartphone market, which is dominated by Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi.
HMD Global’s Vice President for India and APAC, Ravi Kunwar, said that India is a key market for the company, and that the HMD M-KOPA X1 will be launched in India soon after the global launch. He also said that the company will continue to offer Nokia-branded phones, and that the new brand will not affect the existing Nokia customers.
