Samsung has achieved a remarkable feat by sending four of its Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones into the stratosphere to take stunning photos of the Earth from space. The company partnered with PetaPixel, a leading photography website, to document this extraordinary project.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra is Samsung’s most advanced smartphone to date, featuring a powerful processor, a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED display, and a quad-camera system with a 108-megapixel main sensor. The phone also boasts a 10x optical zoom and a 100x digital zoom, making it ideal for capturing distant objects.
To showcase the phone’s impressive capabilities, Samsung designed a special rig that consisted of a carbon fiber frame, a flight computer, and a hydrogen-filled balloon. The rig was attached to the phone, which was set to take photos at regular intervals using a custom app. Four identical rigs were launched from different locations in the western United States, reaching altitudes of over 120,000 feet.

The result was a collection of over 150 amazing photos that showed the Earth’s curvature, the sun’s rays, and the stars. The photos also revealed the diverse landscapes of the region, from the snow-capped mountains of Colorado to the deserts of Nevada. The photos were transmitted to a ground station using a satellite modem, and then uploaded to PetaPixel’s website for the world to see.
