Philippines – Samsung will supply camera sensors for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 series, marking the first time the South Korean tech giant has manufactured the components for iPhones and ending Sony’s long-standing status as the sole supplier, according to a report from TheElec.

The sensors will be produced at Samsung’s existing semiconductor facility in Austin, Texas, where the company has notified the Austin city council of a $19 billion investment to expand operations. The new CMOS image sensor (CIS) production line is expected to begin operations as early as March 2026 – well ahead of the iPhone 18’s anticipated debut in the first half of 2027.
Pro models of the iPhone 18 are likely to feature the U.S.-built components, which will use a new three-stack sensor design. The shift represents a significant change in Apple’s supply chain strategy, which has relied exclusively on Sony for iPhone camera sensors for years.
Samsung is set to begin installing CIS production equipment at its Austin fab in the coming months as it ramps up for the new partnership.
