Smart Unveils New Feature Allowing Mobile Users to Transition from Physical SIM to eSIM Without Changing Their Number

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), a subsidiary of PLDT, is spearheading the adoption of eSIM technology among Filipinos by offering prepaid subscribers the opportunity to switch from physical SIM to an eSIM while preserving their existing mobile number. This revolutionary service, a first-of-its-kind in the Philippines, is set to redefine the mobile experience for prepaid customers.

    Understanding eSIM

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is the digital counterpart to a traditional physical SIM card. It offers mobile users a seamless way to access data, call, and text services without the need for a physical SIM card. Its digital nature makes it easier to activate, manage, transfer, and protect against damage, offering a significant advantage over physical SIM cards.

    How to Switch to eSIM

Lloyd R. Manaloto, Head of Prepaid at Smart, stated that Smart Prepaid customers can now upgrade their physical SIM to an eSIM for a nominal fee of Php99. All they need to do is present their physical SIM and a valid government ID at the nearest Smart Store. Non-Smart subscribers, on the other hand, can convert their physical SIM into a Smart Prepaid eSIM for free, provided they obtain their Unique Subscriber Code from their current network provider and submit the necessary documentation to a Smart Store.

Extending eSIM Capabilities to Prepaid Subscribers

This groundbreaking service extends Smart’s existing eSIM capabilities, which were previously available only to postpaid subscribers. Now, whether you’re a prepaid or postpaid subscriber, it’s easier than ever to switch to the Smart network and get your eSIM, as stated by Shing N. Dimagiba, Head of Postpaid at Smart.

    Benefits of Switching to eSIM

The transition from a physical SIM to an eSIM while retaining the same number eliminates the typical inconveniences associated with changing numbers, such as notifying contacts and updating apps and online accounts linked to the number.

    Smart’s Innovative Offers

Jerome Y. Almirante, Head of Innovations and Digital Services at Smart, expressed his excitement about the new service, stating that it would make it easier for subscribers across all networks to enjoy the benefits of eSIM technology and access Smart’s innovative offerings.

Compatibility and Access to Smart Prepaid eSIM

The Smart Prepaid eSIM is compatible with eSIM-capable devices, including the latest flagship models from Apple, Google, Huawei, and Samsung. With a Smart Prepaid eSIM, users can access Smart’s innovative prepaid offers, such as Power All, All Data, and Magic Data, which provide larger data allocations, longer validity periods, and no expiry dates, respectively.

    Availability of Smart Prepaid eSIM

Smart launched the first Prepaid eSIM in the Philippines in July 2023 and has since made it widely available to mobile users through various channels, including the Smart Online Store, accredited retailers, airport kiosks, and leading e-commerce sites.

    Smart’s Award-Winning Network

The Smart Prepaid eSIM is powered by Smart’s award-winning mobile network, which has been recognized by independent network analytics from Opensignal for delivering the Philippines’ Best 5G Coverage and Best 5G Availability.
