Sony has officially confirmed that an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is rolling out globally to PlayStation 5 Pro players in the coming weeks. The announcement, published on PlayStation Blog, confirms long-running rumors that the PS5 Pro’s AI upscaling technology was set for a major upgrade.

PSSR is an AI-powered upscaling library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel to increase effective resolution while maintaining performance. According to Sony, the technology has already been used to enhance more than 50 titles on PS5 Pro. The newly upgraded version takes what Sony describes as “a very different approach” to both the neural network and the overall algorithm, resulting in improved clarity and stability.

The first game to debut the upgraded PSSR is Resident Evil Requiem, which launched on February 27, 2026. Sony says the new version helps maintain both high frame rates and image quality, making it ideal for visually dense titles.

Coverage from Reforge Gaming on Youtube highlighted that the update appeared alongside the installation of Resident Evil Requiem, with some players noticing a system update on PS5 Pro at the same time. The channel pointed out that side-by-side comparisons show significant improvements in fine details, particularly hair rendering, with reduced fuzziness and clearer strand definition. The report also referenced early technical impressions praising the update as a major improvement for the console’s image reconstruction.

Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager of the Engine Development Support Section in the R&D Foundational Technology Department at Capcom, explained how the enhanced upscaler benefits the game. He said the team focused on elevating the protagonist’s presentation using an upgraded RE Engine to deepen immersion. Each strand of hair and beard is rendered as a polygon, moving realistically with body motion and wind. Light also reacts dynamically depending on how strands overlap, producing subtle changes in texture and realism.

Ijuin noted that these intricate details are traditionally difficult to upscale because of their complexity. The upgraded PSSR, however, can process these textures more accurately, preserving clarity without introducing blur. He added that the goal is to deliver an unprecedented level of horror immersion, visual fidelity, and gameplay feel.

According to reports cited by Reforge Gaming, the improved PSSR may also be retroactively enabled in other supported titles, allowing PS5 Pro players to activate the upgraded version beyond Resident Evil Requiem.

With the global rollout set to begin in the coming weeks, Sony’s latest PSSR update marks another step in its push toward AI-driven rendering on the PS5 Pro, promising sharper visuals and stronger performance across its growing library.
