MediaTek CEO has confirmed that ARM, one of the leading chip designer, is working with Xiaomi, to create their own processors. This means that Xiaomi could soon join the ranks of Samsung, Apple, Huawei, and Google, who have all developed their own in-house chips for their devices.
Xiaomi and ARM collaborate on custom chip using TSMC’s CoWoS technology
According to the source, ARM and Xiaomi have been working on this project for some time, and the first test chips are expected to be ready by the second quarter of 2024. The chips will reportedly use TSMC’s advanced CoWoS packaging technology, which allows for high-performance and low-power consumption.
The MediaTek CEO also revealed that ARM had previously partnered with Oppo, another Chinese smartphone maker, to develop custom chips, but the project was terminated due to various difficulties. It remains to be seen how Xiaomi and ARM will overcome the challenges of chip design and manufacturing, and what kind of features and technologies they will include in their upcoming processors.
This news is a significant development for the smartphone industry, as it shows that Xiaomi is aiming to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek, the two dominant chip suppliers, and to gain more control over its hardware and software. It also indicates that ARM is expanding its presence and influence in the PC and mobile markets, competing with the likes of Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA.
