Quezon City, PH – Qualcomm, one of the leading mobile chip manufacturer, has filed a lawsuit against Transsion Holdings, the parent company of popular smartphone brands Infinix, Tecno, and Itel, alleging infringement of four of Qualcomm’s patents. The lawsuit, filed in the (Delhi High Court) in India, claims that Transsion has violated “non-standard essential patents,” though the specific patents in question have not been publicly disclosed.

Transsion has experienced significant growth in the global smartphone market, particularly in emerging economies. The company’s focus on budget and mid-range smartphones has propelled it to become the fourth-largest smartphone manufacturer worldwide. This rapid rise, coupled with Transsion’s reliance on alternative chip suppliers like MediaTek and Unisoc, has seemingly prompted Qualcomm’s legal action.

Qualcomm is known for its aggressive approach to patent licensing, often leveraging its dominant position in the mobile chip market to secure favorable licensing agreements. However, this tactic may be less effective against Transsion, which primarily relies on other chip manufacturers.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, a Transsion spokesperson stated that the company has already signed a “5G standard patent license agreement” with Qualcomm and is fulfilling its obligations under that agreement. This raises questions about the rationale behind Qualcomm’s lawsuit if a licensing agreement is already in place.

The specific nature of the alleged infringement remains unclear, as the patents in question have not been publicly disclosed. Industry analysts are closely watching the case, as it could have significant implications for the future of patent licensing in the smartphone industry. Both Qualcomm and Transsion have yet to provide detailed statements regarding the specific allegations and the ongoing legal proceedings.
