MediaTek has quietly unveiled the Dimensity 6400, a chip representing a modest yet meaningful improvement over its predecessor, the Dimensity 6300. Manufactured using the same 6nm TSMC process, the Dimensity 6400 boasts a slightly enhanced clock speed for its two prime Cortex-A76 cores – 2.5GHz, compared to the Dimensity 6300’s 2.4GHz. The remaining six Cortex-A55 cores maintain a 2.0GHz clock speed, and the GPU remains the Mali-G57 MC2. While the changes may seem incremental, they contribute to noticeable performance gains in certain tasks.

Mediatek Dimensity 6400 Specifications

The Dimensity 6400 supports displays with resolutions up to 1080×2520 FHD+ and refresh rates of up to 120Hz, further enhanced with 10-bit color and MediaTek’s 3D ULT technology for improved visual fidelity.

Memory and storage options include support for LPDDR4X RAM with a maximum frequency of 2133MHz and UFS 2.2 storage. The integrated Image Signal Processor (ISP) supports a primary camera of up to 108MP, along with two additional 16MP cameras, enabling advanced multi-camera setups.

Connectivity is a key strength. The Dimensity 6400 offers 2G/3G/4G/5G multi-mode support, achieving peak download speeds of up to 3.3Gbps. MediaTek claims this translates to up to a 40% speed increase in urban areas and a 30% improvement in suburban environments when compared to competing solutions. Wi-Fi 5 (a/b/g/n/ac) and Bluetooth 5.2 are also included.

Power efficiency is addressed through MediaTek’s 5G UltraSave 3.0+, promising a 13-30% improvement in power consumption compared to competitors. The chip also incorporates Situationally Intelligent Enhancements, designed to optimize performance in challenging environments like high-speed trains, subways, and underground parking garages. Furthermore, the inclusion of LB+LB ENDC and 8-Layer DL MIMO support enhances dual low-band ENDC (E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity) and 8-layer DL MIMO capabilities for improved signal reception and data throughput.

Dimensity 6400 vs. Dimensity 6300: A new Chip but same Architecture

The Dimensity 6400 builds upon the foundation laid by the Dimensity 6300, offering a refined and more efficient experience. The slight CPU clock speed increase, while seemingly minor, results in a tangible performance boost, particularly noticeable in demanding applications and multitasking. The improved 5G connectivity and power efficiency features further solidify its position as a compelling option for mid-range smartphones.

However, the core architecture remains largely similar, meaning the substantial performance leap seen in generational upgrades isn’t present here. The Dimensity 6400 is essentially a polished version of its predecessor, focusing on optimization and refinement rather than revolutionary advancements. Users upgrading from the Dimensity 6300 might find the improvements worthwhile, but those considering a significant jump in performance should explore higher-tier chipsets.

The MediaTek Dimensity 6400 represents a calculated and incremental upgrade over the Dimensity 6300. While not a ground-breaking leap, the improvements in clock speed, 5G performance, and power efficiency make it a solid choice for mid-range devices aiming for enhanced performance and connectivity. The focus on optimization and refinement, rather than radical changes, positions the Dimensity 6400 as a compelling option for manufacturers and consumers seeking a balanced combination of performance and energy efficiency.
