If you are looking for a new mobile phone, you might be overwhelmed by the variety of display technologies available in the market. From LCD to OLED, from IPS to AMOLED, each type of screen has its own strengths and weaknesses. But what if there was a way to combine the best of both worlds? What if you could have a screen that offers wide viewing angles, accurate colors, and high contrast ratios?

That’s where LG’s IPS Black technology comes in. IPS Black is a new innovation that enhances the performance of IPS LCD screens by reducing light leakage and improving liquid crystal alignment. The result is a display that can achieve deeper black levels, higher contrast ratios, and better color accuracy than conventional IPS displays.

    What is IPS Black?

IPS, or in-plane switching, is a type of LCD technology that uses liquid crystals that rotate when electricity is applied to them. This allows for better viewing angles and color reproduction than other LCD technologies, such as TN or VA. However, IPS screens also have some drawbacks, such as lower contrast ratios and higher power consumption.

    Dell’s UltraSharp U3223QE is a 31.5-inch IPS Black monitor.

IPS Black is a new technology that aims to overcome these limitations by minimizing light leakage and improving liquid crystal alignment. Light leakage occurs when some of the backlight passes through the liquid crystals even when they are supposed to be dark. This reduces the contrast ratio and makes the black colors look grayish. Liquid crystal alignment refers to how well the liquid crystals are arranged in a uniform and parallel manner. This affects the color accuracy and grayscale expression of the screen.

LG has developed a new method to reduce light leakage and improve liquid crystal alignment by using an additional layer of liquid crystal and a special pixel structure. The additional layer of liquid crystal acts as a filter that blocks more light from the backlight when the pixels are dark. The special pixel structure uses smaller gaps between the electrodes and the liquid crystals, which reduces the distortion and scattering of light. These innovations allow IPS Black to achieve 41% deeper black levels and 2,000:1 or higher contrast ratios, compared to conventional IPS displays.

    How does IPS Black perform?

IPS Black not only improves the contrast ratio and black levels of IPS screens, but also enhances the color accuracy and viewing angle performance. IPS Black can display more accurate colors, especially in grayscale, where it has a Delta-E of 0.6 or less (anything under 1.0 is considered excellent). IPS Black also maintains high contrast and color fidelity at wider viewing angles, up to 1.4x higher contrast ratio at a 45-degree viewing angle.

IPS Black has been tested and verified by various third-party organizations, such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories), TÜV Rheinland, Intertek, and SGS. These organizations have certified that IPS Black meets or exceeds the standards for display quality, such as HDR10+, DisplayHDR 600, DCI-P3 98%, sRGB 99%, Adobe RGB 90%, etc.

    What are the next steps?

IPS Black is currently available in LG’s UltraFine Display Ergo monitors, which are designed for professionals who need high-quality displays for their work. However, LG has also expressed its intention to apply IPS Black technology to other products in the future, such as laptops, tablets, and mobile phones.

If LG can successfully implement IPS Black technology in mobile phone displays, it could revolutionize the market and challenge the dominance of OLED screens. OLED screens are known for their high contrast ratios and true black colors, but they also have some disadvantages, such as higher cost, lower brightness, susceptibility to burn-in, and shorter lifespan. IPS Black could offer a viable alternative that combines the advantages of both LCD and OLED technologies.

IPS Black could also enable new features and applications for mobile phone displays, such as always-on display (AOD), dark mode, HDR video playback, gaming, etc. These features could benefit from the improved contrast ratio and black levels of IPS Black screens, which would enhance the visibility and readability of the content.

    Conclusion

IPS Black is a new technology that improves the performance of IPS LCD screens by reducing light leakage and improving liquid crystal alignment. It offers deeper black levels, higher contrast ratios, better color accuracy, and wider viewing angles than conventional IPS displays. It also has lower power consumption and longer lifespan than OLED screens.

IPS Black is currently available in LG’s UltraFine Display Ergo monitors, but it could also be applied to other products in the future, such as mobile phones. If LG can bring IPS Black technology to mobile phone displays, it could create a new standard for display quality and offer new possibilities for users.
