If today’s New York Times Connections grid has you burning through your mistakes, you are not alone. Puzzle #1148 features some heavy misdirection, with several words seemingly fitting into conversation or travel themes before pulling the rug out from under you.

Below are strategic, spoiler-free hints to help you group today’s words on your own, followed by the exact categories and answers at the bottom of the page.

    Today’s Connections Strategy & Commentary

Watch out for the red herrings today. At first glance, words like Airplane and Beast look like an obvious match for travel or animal themes, while Actually and Like could easily be sorted into general conversation groups. Committing to those false groups early will cost you lives. We recommend looking closely at how each word functions in sentences or what you can add to the end of them first; separating common uses from hidden patterns will make the remaining words significantly easier to manage.

    Connections Hints Today: Category Clues

If you just need a nudge to get your brain moving in the right direction, here are clues for the four color-coded groups:

    • 🟨 Yellow Group Hint (Easiest): Words used to fill pauses or gaps in speech.
    • 🟩 Green Group Hint (Medium): Words that indicate how something is done or achieved.
    • 🟦 Blue Group Hint (Hard): You can add the word “mode” to the end of each of these.
    • 🟪 Purple Group Hint (Tricky): Each word becomes a US airport code when you add one letter at the start.

Stuck on one word? If you have Olga, try thinking of it as a base to add a letter to rather than a name. It belongs to the trickier Purple group today!
