A new report from tipster Li Qiao on Weibo reveals major changes coming to the software experience for OnePlus and realme users. The two brands are set to merge and unify their operating systems under the ColorOS banner, a move that will likely draw close attention from the community, especially those currently using realmeUI 7.0.

The biggest impact will be on users currently running realmeUI 7.0. Under the new plan, these devices are said to eventually transition to ColorOS instead of staying on their native interface.

While that sounds like a big change, the groundwork is already there. realmeUI and ColorOS share the same underlying architecture. OnePlus’s OxygenOS is also built on this common foundation. That shared base makes the technical side of the upgrade much easier to manage and means both brands can smoothly move to the same final version: ColorOS 17.

So, what will users actually get with this new version?

Early details point to a major visual refresh. ColorOS 17 is expected to introduce dynamic lighting animations and advanced aurora rendering effects across the interface. The system will also feature improved animation tuning and better stability for daily use. These upgrades aim to create a smoother, more polished experience across the board.

Still, the transition carries real risks. User satisfaction will be put to the test as people adjust to a new layout and workflow. Long-time realme fans may miss the distinctive touches of realmeUI, while Oneplus users will see their OxygenOS environment align more closely with the rest of the lineup.

There is no official word yet on rollout timelines, device eligibility, or whether favorite features from each brand will carry over.

Eventually, ColorOS 17, based on Android 17, is reportedly expected to arrive on OnePlus devices, starting with flagship models from the OnePlus 11 series to the OnePlus 15 series, followed by other mid-range devices and even the OnePlus Pad series.
